Shirley Windward Biography

SHIRLEY WINDWARD STATEMENT I am a poet. I believe we live in a global web that holds every one of us in a community. All we have to do is consciously shake the lines connecting us – and poetry, among all arts and sciences, is deeply suited to this necessary gesture of the spirit. Consequently, I bless the gift of language given me and send it out to anyone who pulls even slightly on the connecting lines of the world web we share. BIOGRAPHY Shirley Windward has lived through several wars, given up three libraries, married and helped raise two sons, traveled through Europe, Asia, Africa and the States, and founded a successful secondary school in Los Angeles, where she lives with her husband and continues to write and publish. She has produced one novel, The midwife Chronicles, and – with Audrey Hargreaves – two volumes of poetry, Slipping Honey In and Two Kisses. Her avocations include ceramics, piano practice, the lost art of letter writing and the pursuit of certain charities. She would rather read than eat heavily and loves short runs on her scooter, riding shotgun for her husband just turned ninety. Her latest cultural exploits include an upcoming CD of thirty poems produced by Reeva Hunter and Robert Savery (available through the Windward School Student Store, this website, and other venues) and the usual search for a publisher of a new book of short stories, loosely connected with white magic – WITCHCRAFT, UNLIMITED; and her most recent publication of poems, WEB SONGS, is still available at Dutton’s Books Brentwood or the Village Bookstore in the Palisades.
